The science behind our work

The somatic power of sound refers to the body's physiological and neurological response to vibration. Because sound travels faster than thought and resonates through the fluids and fascia of the body, it can bypass the cognitive brain to directly down-regulate the nervous system, reduce tension, and safely release stored trauma.

It operates via several key mechanisms:

• Nervous System Regulation: Vibrational frequencies (from instruments like gongs or tuning forks) stimulate the vagus nerve, shifting the body from a "fight-or-flight" state to a parasympathetic "rest-and-digest" state.

• Cellular Resonance: Because human bodies are composed mostly of water, sound waves ripple through tissue at a cellular level, acting as an internal massage that prompts muscles to soften and breath to slow down.

• Pain & Stress Relief: Low-frequency sounds and vibrations trigger the release of endorphins (natural painkillers) and lower stress hormones like cortisol.

• Non-Verbal Release: It provides a safe, body-based container for emotional release, allowing the body to process feelings without the need to analyze or verbally articulate past experiences.

Common Somatic Sound Practices

• Sound Baths / Vibrational Therapy: Immersive sessions using crystal or Tibetan singing bowls.

• Vocal Toning: Deliberate use of the voice, such as the somatic "Voo" sound or humming, to vibrate the chest and soothe the autonomic nervous system.
